Indian Sauce: Everything you need to know about it!

When may a sauce be called Indian sauce? Which varieties are traditionally available in India and which ingredients do you need for a successful Indian sauce? These questions will be answered in detail in the following article.

What exactly does the term chutney mean?

The term chutney already points to the Indian subcontinent, because it is an expression from the language of the Indians (Hindi). The word translated means something like sauce. So, a chutney is basically nothing more than an Indian sauce. However, the spelling of the word has changed somewhat over time due to the influence of the British.

    Which chutneys are there anyway?

There are a lot of chutneys in India. The spicy and often fruity sauces are really already part of the food culture, many dishes are incomplete without the chutney. The different flavors of the chutneys are perfectly matched to the particular food. Very popular is for example the Tamatar Chutney. This sauce is made from tomatoes and therefore resembles a salsa. Another very common chutney is the Imli Chutney. This chutney tastes sweet and sour. The sweetness comes from the date and the acid from the tamarind. This spice from the tamarind tree is used almost worldwide. But there are also chutneys with a fresh touch, such as the Pudina Chutney, which is prepared with mint. The Dhanya-Pudina Chutney is not only spiced with mint, but also with coriander. A fruity chutney is the Aam Chutney. This variety is made with mango and is probably the best known in our latitudes. Often, coconut milk and chilli are other ingredients of this Indian sauce. For example, a pure coconut chutney is the naariyal chutney. The most popular chutneys can be found in the following list:

    • Tamatar Chutney
    • Imli Chutney
    • Pudina Chutney
    • Dhanya Pudina Chutney
    • Aam Chutney
    • Naariyal Chutney

Another popular Indian sauce is the Korma Simmer Sauce. The taste is nutty and mild. This Indian sauce goes perfectly with chicken and is traditionally eaten with rice dishes. The ingredients responsible for the flavor of the Korma Simmer Sauce are mainly the roasted almonds, as well as the chilli.

    Masala: What is that?

Another word that you have probably already picked up somewhere in this context is the term masala. This word, too, comes from the Indian language. As masala in India is called a spice mixture. Undoubtedly, Garam Masala is one of the best-known concoctions of this kind, but there are also others. What these are and how they are traditionally used in India, you will learn in the next paragraph. Which spice blends are there for the different foods? As with the chutneys, there are different flavors in the Masalas, depending on the individual components. The beforementioned Garam Masala, for example, is traditionally used in India for the curry dishes. The Chat Masala, on the other hand, is used for salads and as an ingredient for refreshing chutneys. You've probably heard of the Tanduri Masala before. This spicy Masala is also great for your next barbecue. The name is meaningful. The word "Tandur" means translated as much as "charcoal stove". In India, it is mainly used for marinating meat and poultry. Very popular, even in Europe is the Tanduri Chicken. The most famous Masalas are as follows:

    • Garam Masala
    • Chat Masala
    • Tanduri Masala

The typical Indian taste is also enjoyed in other countries!

For some time, the use of chutneys in our kitchens is no longer a rarity. All over the world, the delicious Indian sauces are very popular. This is highly due to the many areas where you can use them in the kitchen. Of course, poultry dishes such as Chicken Tikka Masala are especially famous, but other foods such as pork also tastes great with a fruity chutney. If you like to drink a cup of tea, you can also enjoy the typical Indian taste. For a cup of masala chai.

The British invented the curry powder!

As already mentioned, a spice mixture in India is called Masala. The name curry comes rather from a popular, Indian dish. Due to the colonization of India by the British, both expressions have been mixed. The British are inventing a spice blend inspired by traditional Indian Masalas. The new spice is called Curry Powder (Curry Powder). But if you just say curry, everyone knows what you want.

The Indian sauce does not have to inevitably be produced in India!

A good Indian chutney with masala does not necessarily have to be made in its country of origin. In other nations, such as Malaysia, many delicious variations of this sauce are also produced. This is further proof of the great popularity of Indian sauce. Even in Germany, delicious chutney is produced. In our shop you will find a large selection of these delicious sauces.

The Indian sauces can be an alternative to Ketchup & Co!

As already mentioned, there are numerous classics that become perfect only with the use of chutney. Of course, you can also experiment with the sauces. How about, for example, with a fruity-spicy dip, in the form of a chutney, at your next barbecue?

The conclusion about Indian sauce is:

Another name for Indian sauce is chutney. Spice mixtures are called in the Indian language "Masala". The delicious sauces with the spice blends are really popular all over the world. Since the British colonial rule, a new variant of these spice blends called curry powder is also very popular outside the UK. But a good chutney does not necessarily have to be produced in India. The sauces are also produced in other countries, such as Malaysia and even Germany. A spice mixture (masala) belongs, like the chutney, especially in India, to the food culture. The diversity of the chutneys provides for a large application in the typical Indian cuisine. There are the sauces as a refreshing version with mint or hot with fiery chilli. Some recipe classics are becoming more and more prevalent among us, for example the Tanduri Chicken. In our shop you will find a wide selection of delicious Indian sauces.
