7 Pot - each variety is one of the Superhots!

This article deals extensively with chilies, which, not without reason, are among the hottest in the world. Learn where the name comes from and which varieties belong to this category.

The name is legendary!

According to the traditional legend, the indigenous people of the island state of Trinidad and Tobago, the so-called Caribbeans, each use only one pod of this chilli to spice up a total of 7 full cooking pots. We can very well imagine that this interesting legend has a true core, as the 7 pot chilies are really extremely hot. This fact has catapulted some 7 pot chilies directly to the top of the hottest chilli in the world. The varieties belong to the so-called Superhots, which is due to Scoville units beyond the one million mark. Like many other extremely hot chilies, the 7 pots belong to the Capsicum Chinese type.

Which varieties are available with the 7 Pots?

Among the most popular varieties, which are known under the generic term 7 Pot, include, among others, the "Brain Stain", the "Primo" and the "Douglah". The name Primo does not mean that this variety was first available, but refers to the breeder, whose nickname is simply Primo. But these are only a few of the many varieties. Another well-known representative of the 7 Pots is, for example, the Jonah variety. In the meantime, many new variants have been created through crossbreeding and breeding, such as 7 Pot Bubblegum. You can also find the different varieties of Caribbean chilies in the following list:

  • Brain Stain
  • Primo
  • Douglah
  • Jonah
  • 7 Pot Bubblegum
  • Numerous crosses and breeds

7 Pots are real rarities!

Unfortunately, the seeds of these plants are very rare and therefore difficult to get. Our Pepperworld Hot Shop [Link1] is a welcome change. Due to the rarity of these Caribbean varieties, the 7 Pots are of course also relatively precious. The hot chilies are often available either as a seed or in processed form, for example as a hot sauce. With us you can even order your own 7 pot chili plant, so you not only have especially fresh chilies, but also a decorative eye-catcher. If you decide to breed your own 7 pots, there are a few things to keep in mind. The area of origin of these fiery chilies is known to be located in a very warm region of the world, so the plants are best grown in a greenhouse. If you have no room for a greenhouse in the garden, then you should at least put the plants in a very sunny place, but at the same time protected from the wind. As soon as the outside temperature falls below 12 ° C, you have to put the plants inside, if not all chilies have fully matured.

There are clear identification features!

Of course, the burning heat of these chilies is a clear recognition feature for these chilies, but not the only one. If you have survived the first heat kick unscathed, you will quickly notice a very delicious, fruity aroma in the hot 7 Pots. Another indication that one variety is a 7 pot chilli is the grooved shape, which is reminiscent of a lantern. In terms of color, however, there are differences in the pods; there are the extremely hot chilies, not only in red and yellow, but also, for example, brownish and orange. The plants of this variety are not very large with 70 to 120 centimeters in height, but they develop huge leaves and beautiful, white to cream-colored flowers. These flowers develop relatively quickly to really fiery fruits, which are ripe after about 100 to 120 days. As the growth of the plant is strong, it usually produces a particularly productive crop. We have summarized the varieties of the 7 Pots beyond doubt for you:

  • extreme heat (the varieties belong to the Superhots)
  • fruity aroma
  • furrows
  • fruits reminiscent of a lantern
  • with a variety of colors (red, yellow, orange, brown)
  • relatively small plants (70 to 120 cm)
  • very large leaves
  • flowers are cream or white
  • maturity: about 100 to 120 days
  • productive harvest

How are the 7 pots used in the kitchen?

Mainly the varieties of the 7 Pots are used for the production of savory chilli sauces and fiery spice powder, which can have a variety of uses in the kitchen. The Superhots can of course also be cooked in the piece, depending on how hot the result should be, but you have to remove them in time. Since these varieties are really extremely hot chilies, you must pay attention to the safety precautions during processing. For example, to prevent injury, be sure to wear gloves. If you want to grind your own powder, even a dust mask is advisable. Of course, all equipment, such as the chopping board, must be thoroughly cleaned after processing the 7 pots. Of course, due to the powerful heat of such chilies you have to pay attention to the correct dosage. We have listed the uses of the Caribbean Superhots again in bullet points for you:

  • chilli sauces
  • chilli powder
  • cook carefully (remove on time)
  • dose (less is, in this case, really more)

The extremely hot conclusion is:

According to tradition, the indigenous people of the Caribbean would only use a single pod of these chilies to heat up whole seven pots of food. This story is at the base of the name 7 Pot. There are some natural varieties in the Antilles, but by crossing, many other types have emerged. Unfortunately, 7 pot chilies are regarded as genuine rarities and are, as a rule, very difficult to obtain. In this case we are a real exception. At Pepperworld you will not only find products made from these varieties, but also the whole plant. The fruits themselves, are always well recognizable by the furrows and the shape reminiscent of a lantern. The varieties are not easily identifiable by the color, as there are varieties with different colors. The Superhots are mainly used for the production of sauces and chilli powder. Since the 7 pots are among the hottest chilies in the world, the so-called Superhots, you have to be careful when processing them.
