These are the most important facts about delicacies!

Again and again, as soon as we think about special foods, we come across the term "delicatessen". But what exactly does this word say? The following article provides information about what is actually meant by the term "delicatessen" and which ingredients are allowed to be called that.

What criteria does a food have to meet to qualify as so-called delicatessen?

To put it in advance, the term "delicatessen" in itself is not protected by law in Germany. This means, theoretically, any food, for promotional purposes, may be dubbed as delicatessen. In general, however, a food is considered as a so-called delicatessen only if it is not consumed every day. Another indication of whether an ingredient is delicacy or not is the particular care taken during the entire manufacturing process. Of course, this begins, even in advance, with the selection of suitable raw materials for the later delicacy. Often food is considered a delicacy in one country, but in their countries of origin they are considered as everyday food. A very good example of this kind of delicatessen is the real wasabi. It is also important to mention that the list of delicatessen ingredients changes over time, over and over again. Of course, this is mainly because of lifestyle and financial resources change over time. The expert speaks in these cases of the change of the so-called socio-cultural framework. One of the best examples of this phenomenon is the Maultasche (traditional German dish). The dish is originally a delicacy, but at the present time it is cheap and available all year round. Whether or not a food is considered delicatessen depends on the following factors:

  • The ingredients are selected very carefully.
  • The food is rare.
  • The ingredients are not for everyday consumption.
  • The food often comes from another country.

La Dolce Vita or also: Delicatessen from Italy:

As already indicated, real delicacies often come from other countries, these countries need not necessarily be so far away. Italy, for example, is a place where a whole range of Mediterranean food comes from, which are traded other countries as delicacies. Without a doubt, the most famous Italian delicacies include olive oil, salami and red wine. Strictly speaking, the wine is not considered a foodstuff, but a luxury product. A true Italian meal looks like that, but probably less differentiated. Another delicacy of our southern European neighbors is of course the popular ciabatta bread. All these ingredients are rarely used in our local kitchen, so they are also considered delicacies here.

Other international delicatessen specialties:

The products that are considered delicacies here, do not only come from Italy. A fitting example is, of course, the wasabi already mentioned. This comes from Asia and is mainly used in Japanese cuisine. But there are still many, other examples of delicacies from other countries. The list could be continued almost to infinity. There are various delicacies from every region of the world. Whether Oriental, Mediterranean, American, British or Asian, there is certainly something for every taste.

The local cuisine offers delicatessen specialties!

Of course, there are also so-called delicatessen specialties in the German cuisine. Among the most important are undoubtedly the North Sea crab and the truffles. The underground fungus is protected throughout the German territory. This means that he may only be collected with an express special permit. Since it is therefore a real rarity, the truffle is of course also a delicatessen product.

Why are delicatessen items often a bit more expensive?

Of course, the price, which is often upscale, depends primarily on the production of the food already described. Of course, the fact that only selected raw materials manage to be processed into delicacies naturally also affects the price of the respective specialty. Some delicacies are also very rare and difficult to produce or harvest, such as truffles and sea salt. This is of course another important criterion, which quite justifies the increased purchase price of the special ingredient.

Where can you find foods that are considered delicacies?

Of course, the so-called delicatessen products are very popular among chefs, especially in the high-end gourmet restaurants. This has a very simple and logical reason. Of course, the master chefs always place very high demands on the food with which they are allowed to work, and in the case of delicatessen specialties, these requirements for quality, texture and taste are generally met. However, more and more amateur chefs recognize the absolute merits of these foods. Among the many advantages that make such a product, of course, especially the special and unique taste. The delicatessen specialties are just the right ingredients for every gourmet, whether professional or private. Of course, the different delicatessen specialties can be used for many different dishes. Not only in the main course, the particularly noble ingredients are used. A good ham, for example, can be enjoyed for breakfast as well as for dinner. The imagination, as so often the kitchen, no limits and experimentation are in any case allowed. The delicatessen products can also harmonize with conventional ingredients.

Where are these so-called delicacies available?

In almost every major city, special delicatessen shops can be found, these usually lead a very large assortment of different delicacies. The selection of fine foods is of course very large in such a delicatessen shop. Meanwhile, the delicatessen products are also found in many conventional supermarkets, often they are offered for sale in an extra deli department. There, the products are many times cheaper than in a specialized shop. Of course, this has a background. The products in the supermarkets and also in the discount stores often contain significantly smaller quantities of the rare ingredients. This difference is compensated with the help of aromas and other artificial additives. Of course, the particularly delicious delicatessen products can also be obtained via the World Wide Web. Of course, we also offer various delicatessen specialties in our Pepperworld Hot Shop. Of course, we look forward to every visit in our shop. The sources for the so-called delicatessen are so:

  • special delicatessen shops
  • delicatessen department in the supermarket or in the discounter
  • online (for example, here in the Pepperworld Hot Shop)

A delicatessen product is always a nice present!

As already mentioned, so-called delicatessen specialties are always very popular with real gourmets, so they are also ideal as a small attention when the next celebration takes place within the family or the circle of friends. Every true connoisseur is more likely to enjoy a rare specialty than any other gift. In some cultures, it is even a duty to offer the host a gift in the form of food, when visiting. In order to stand out from the crowd, a present in the form of a real delicacy is of course always a very good choice.

What is the conclusion about delicatessen?

The name delicatessen is not legally protected in Germany. In general, however, food is considered delicacy if it is either rare or if special care is taken in its production. This applies to all manufacturing processes and begins with the correct selection of the basic ingredients. Some foods, which rarely come to our table in our latitudes, are also considered delicacies here. Of course, the delicatessen products are mainly used in top restaurants, but the use of delicacies is also becoming increasingly popular with many hobby cooks, at home. You can buy the delicacies either in a special deli, in the supermarket or of course on the Internet, for example in our Pepperworld Hot Shop. There is a small selection of exclusive fine specialties that can not only be used in your own kitchen, but also represent a wonderful gift to the host of the next celebration. Due to the special production processes, as well as the often extreme rarity of delicatessen products, these are often a little bit more expensive compared to conventional foods.
