The Cobb BBQ system - The ultimate barbecue all-rounder
Cobb barbecues are pretty special: Whether you’re on a sailboat, with your friends in the park, or pitched up in your tent at a campsite, they are the perfect go-to barbecue set. It looks good and is wonderfully functional — but let’s take a look at this ultimate all-rounder’s origin story.
Where did this Cobb Grill come from anyway?
Cobb barbecues were originally invented by a team of Scandinavians. Conversely, however, it wasn’t built with snowy tundras in mind: It was designed explicitly for use on the warmer southern coasts of South Africa. The team of engineers was hired by the South African government to develop a cooking implement that reduces the risk of fires in the various ‘informal’ communities throughout the country. Constructed from highly flammable materials, these settlements pose a major fire risk. And with South African cuisine comprising lots of barbecuing, it’s a risk that’s tough to avoid. That’s why the inventors of Cobb barbecues were given simple instructions: Create an implement that affords all the advantages of cooking over an open fire while mitigating the exceptional fire risk such a feature poses. The result? Cobb barbecues combine the latest technology to produce a grill that isn’t hot to the touch, omits no explosive flames and reduces fumes. It’s also very economical with the fuel that it uses, making it the ultimate grill for use in the South African kitchen.
Since its inception, Cobb barbecues have continued to develop and become even better for use as a quick grilling solution. Due to this, they’ve grown in popularity all across the world and are now fairly commonly seen even here in Europe. In fact, it’s quickly become the go-to solution for all who want a truly portable, easy to use and uncomplicated grill system for use on the go. This all-rounder is the smallest yet quickest outdoor kitchen on the market, whether you use it to boil water, bake, grill, smoke or fry. On top of all that, it’s also a good-looking implement, featuring a sleek looking Scandinavian design. Here’s why you shouldn’t go without one!
How is a Cobb barbecue put together?
Inside the BBQ, you’ll find a small grate for briquettes. This works as a burn basket of sorts, in which you should lay around 12 briquettes for maximum efficacy. That being said, temperatures of around 180° Celsius can be reached even by using only half that amount. Above the burn basket, you can then lay the grill plate. Lined with teflon, the plate itself can be used for a variety of uses, be it frying, grilling or baking and comes with a series of grooves so that excess fat can run off easily into a specially designed channel and doesn’t fall into the blaze underneath. This way, any excess fumes are also mitigated and the flames don’t rise and fall as unpredictably as with other grills. But how come the casing of the BBQ doesn’t get hot despite internal temperatures of up to 300° Celsius? This interesting development is down to the way the BBQ is constructed. Inside the burn basket, a silicon meshing isolates the outer casing from the heat inside, while the stainless steel lid reflects the heat back into the basket. In this sense, Cobb barbecues can be (carefully) picked up and moved mid-barbecue, with small rubber legs ensuring that it’ll always stand securely when placed back down. The barbecues can also be put together quickly and weigh very little. The most important components of the Cobb barbecues are:
The burn basket.
The grill plate
The external casing made of silicon mesh
Gas Cobb barbecues
Cobb barbecues also come in a premium version which are 100% powered by gas. Exceptionally economical, you can BBQ for around 3 hours despite the canisters being remarkably small. This efficiency is in a large part due to the burn basket which regulates the interior temperature in such a way that little gas is required to maintain the heat. In fact, the flames that eventually heat the grill plate for cooking are merely the excess flames that would otherwise go to waste. But don’t let that fool you: You’ll never notice this when cooking. Additionally, the Cobb premium barbecue also produces zero ash and affords a smoke-free cooking experience (except for that omitted by whatever you barbecue), which results in less cleaning after you’re done.
Which accessories are available?
Cobb barbecues also come with a series of accessories that you can add on to customise the BBQ for your particular needs. Grill/frying pans and woks are available, as well as specially-made carry bags for when using it on the move. In the carry bag, the BBQ packs down small enough so it can fit in practically any rucksack. Baking trays are also available for Cobb barbecues, as well as a series of thermometers for checking the temperature of your grill/meat. Finally, Cobb also manufactures their own line of cleaning fluids/utensils so you can keep your BBQ in perfect condition. The most important accessories for your BBQ are:
Cobb grill plate
Cobb Baking tray
What can you prepare with a Cobb barbecue?
You can prepare practically anything with a Cobb BBQ. Whether you want to fry or grill, it’s up to you. You can let your fantasy run wild. You can even bake a freshly prepared pizza! Just add the lid to turn the barbecue into a small oven. In the same way, you can also use it as a smoker and smoke meats or vegetables. Just remove the lid once you’re done to return to frying and grilling.
What are the disadvantages?
The only disadvantage of Cobb BBQs over larger units is its smaller size. In comparison to larger barbecues, only smaller portions can be prepared on a Cobb. Additionally, bigger cuts of meat, such as large drumsticks are also not possible to cook on a Cobb. In that sense, the biggest disadvantages to owning a Cobb BBQ are:
It’s not possible to barbecue lots in one go.
Big cuts of meat won’t fit.
Pepperworld’s last world on Cobb barbecues
Cobb barbecues are the genius invention of Scandinavian engineers from the middle of the last century. The grill was originally created in order to reduce the risk of fires sweeping through the townships of South Africa. Thanks to the BBQ’s outer shell, being constructed from a silicon mesh, it does not get hot, perfect for moving it during a barbecue and for mitigating the risk of burns and fires. Cobb barbecues are also capable of being used practically anywhere, including on a sailboat! You can also buy various add-ons and accessories for Cobb BBQs to customize it depending on where and how you’re planning on using it and what you’re going to cook. The BBQ is also available in a gas version which produces less fumes and means you don’t have to worry about disposing of any hot ash.
