Bhut Jolokia plant - breed extremely hot chilies!

The following article is about one of the hottest Chilli cultures in the world - the Bhut Jolokia. What is especially important in dealing with these plants and how can you best use their spicy fruits? These and other questions will be answered in detail.

What is important when growing Bhut Jolokia?

Especially important is the place where you plant the Bhut Jolokia plants. When making your choice, make sure that the individual plants have enough space, so that they can really become strong and healthy. Of course, the location that you choose for your Bhut Jolokia plants should also have enough sun exposure as possible. The so-called ghost chilli not only needs enough light and warmth for its growth, but also a nutrient-rich soil is crucial. In the best case, the soil used should be loose and well fertilized. Of course you can also use fresh humus for the cultivation of your Bhut Jolokia plants, the soil of fresh organic materials provides your chilli plant with important nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen. The Bhut Jolokia is a variety of Capsicum Chinese, which is bred in India. In the subtropical country, of course, there is a special, humid and warm climate. For this reason, Bhut Jolokia plants in our latitudes are best grown in a greenhouse. Of course, this is not a must, you can breed the ghost chilli also wonderful in a flowerpot or even in the outdoor flower bed.
No matter where you want to cultivate these plants, you must be aware that the Bhut Jolokia needs some time. As soon as the plant is in bloom, after about 100 days after plantings, it needs on average an extra of 120 days until the fruits have fully matured. Due to the long ripe period you need a little patience with this variety, the harvest time of the Bhut Jolokia is in August and in September. Of course, the size that these plants can reach is worth mentioning, and a healthy Bhut Jolokia plant can grow up to 1.80 m tall. The most important factors that are necessary for a successful cultivation of Bhut Jolokia, we have once again clearly put for you point by point:

  • The individual plants need a lot of space.
  • Bhut Jolokia needs a lot of heat and light.
  • A nutrient-rich soil is very important, for example humus.
  • Bhut Jolokia prefers a humid-warm climate and therefore ideally suited for the greenhouse.
  • This variety has a very long maturation period.
  • The plants can grow up to 1.80 m.

The fruits are versatile!

Of course, the fiery pods can be boiled in many dishes, so they give many meals the special hot twist. Of course you can also use the Bhut Jolokia at the next barbecue, for example by offering an extremely spicy sauce. We strongly advise against eating a fresh Bhut Jolokia pod or parts of it, when raw. Only real chilli heads face competitions of this challenge. But how can you still use the hot chilies? A simple and frequently used method is drying the fruits. After the pods are completely dried out, they can be grounded and processed into spicy chilli powder. You can then use this spice wherever you want to spice up the taste.

When dealing with Bhut Jolokia caution is required!

As soon as the fruits form on the beautiful chilli plant, the Bhut Jolokia begins to mature. The more advanced this ripening process is in the end; the sharper the fruits are, of course. The variety Bhut Jolokia is not without reason considered as one of the fieriest chilies in the world. And that is why, we strongly advise you not only during processing in the kitchen, but already at harvest time to wear appropriate protective clothing, for example gloves. That may sound a bit strange at first, but it's an important piece of advice because the high scoville value can quickly endanger your health. To prevent injuries, for example, by unconscious rubbing, these special measures when dealing with the Bhut Jolokia are absolutely necessary. If you ever get a bit of the hot capsaicin in your eyes, you must immediately dab with a cloth moistened with oil. Under no circumstances should you use water, it would make the whole situation worse.

The plants can also hibernate!

For this to succeed, the plants must be brought to safe inside temperature in time before the cold can damage them. This means in plain text: before the temperatures drop below 12 ° Celsius, you have to put the Bhut Jolokia plants inside. However, you should thin the plant out in advance, so that in the next season new buds can form again. Of course, the right location is crucial, too - make sure that your Bhut Jolokia plant gets enough light in the winter months. If you follow these rules, the ghost chilli can produce extremely hot chilies for several years in a row. What exactly you need to do, if you want to use your Bhut Jolokia plant in the coming season, we have summarized for you once again in short points:

  • As soon as the outside temperature drops below 12 ° Celsius, the plant must be placed inside.
  • For the formation of new buds, the Bhut Jolokia must be thinned out.

What's the fiery conclusion?

If you want to grow your own Bhut Jolokia plants, you must follow important rules. For example, the necessary distance between the individual plants is very important. The right soil is another important point for a successful Bhut Jolokia breeding. If you have enough patience to pass through the ripeness period, you will be rewarded with one of the hottest chilies in the world. These fruits can be used in many ways in the kitchen, but they should not be consumed raw. The so-called ghost chilli is very often dried and then grinded into powder. It is highly recommended to wear gloves throughout the procedure to minimize the risk of serious injury. But the Bhut Jolokia plants have another advantage, they are perennial. This means that you can also grow them in the apartment or the house, and you can have particularly hot chillies also in the next season.
