Chilli seeds— grow your own wild breed!

This article speaks about the wild Chilli breeds. Which species are considered wild chilies and how do you get from a magnificent Chilli plant from a small seed? These and other questions will be answered in detail in the following paragraphs.

What sort of Wild breeds are there?

The wildest of all Chili breeds is undoubtedly the Chiltepin, which is considered the prototype of the Chilies. The breed is available in two different varieties, with different colored fruits, in yellow and red. Other varieties are, among others, Inca Surprise and Sonora. The Sonora also develops either green or red chili. In terms of heat, the many wild varieties tend to move in the upper range on our internal scale. There are, however, also very mild varieties, such as, for example, the Capsicum lanceolatum or the Capsicum rhomoideum, which has only recently been included on the list of chilli plants. There are also two really rare varieties Capsicum Tovarii and Chiltepin Sonora Brown. However, these are just a few of the wild chilli peppers. In order to provide you with a better overview, we have summarized the varieties in a list:

  • Chiltepin
  • Inca Surprise
  • Sonora
  • Capsicum Lanceolatum
  • Capsicum Rhomoideum
  • Chiltepin Sonora Brown
  • Capsicum Tovarii

Where do these varieties come from?

The Southern and Central American continent is considered to be the origin of the Chilies. Above all, in countries such as Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Mexico, the wild Chilies are native. However, the area stretches to the north reaching up to the present United States of America. In all these regions there is a sunny, warm and predominantly dry climate, ideal for the fiery Chilies.

How do you successfully grow wild Chilies?

Here are some points you need to consider if you successfully want to breed wild Chilies. In order to check whether the seeds will be growing, it is advisable to carry out a so-called germination test in advance. How does this test work? To test the germination of the seeds, you simply take some of the seeds out of the bag and place them on a tray where you have already placed a moist kitchen paper. To simulate a small greenhouse, you have to cover the whole thing with fresh plastic foil. It is important, however, that you make some small holes on the top, the simplest way to do that is, for example, with a fork or a toothpick. If the seeds begin to germinate after a few days, this is a good indication that you can consider planting them. If everything is in order, you can begin the breeding process, but you have to choose the right time as the chilies require an average of 60-90 days for ripening. Therefore, the breeding should start by mid-March at the latest. For this purpose, you can use the special turf growing tray. Look for a suitable, sufficiently warm place for your chilies, which can be for example near a radiator. The plants need temperatures of at least 22 ° Celsius. In the open air, these temperatures are not reached until May, but this is much too late to start breeding, since the autumn can already be frosty, which can ruin the plants.

As soon as the first seedlings can be seen, the seeds can be converted; either you plant them in a cultivation tray - if so, the chilies are not yet allowed into the open air; or you put the seedlings in a mini-greenhouse - if so, then, it is possible to take your growing plant outside. The heat of the sunlight is stored in the interior, just like in a large greenhouse, so that optimal, climatic conditions are generated. The most important points to be observed during the breeding of chilies are summarized again as follows:

  • If you want to check the germination of the seeds, you should do a so-called germination test.
  • The right time for the breeding is no later than mid-March
  • Cultivation should be carried out in a warm place, for example near a heater
  • Chilies in a mini-greenhouse are allowed to be placed outside sooner than the ones without a green house

Growing your own will take a long time!

The seeds of wild species are somewhat more elaborate when it comes to breeding than the varieties that are more often cultivated. This is mainly because of the longer duration that the seeds need to germinate. Even with the greenest thumb it can take up to a month until the seeds germinate. When cultivating chilies, you must, of course, remember that the plants can reach a certain size. In the course of a season, chilies, depending on the species, are sometimes more than two meters high. You must also pay attention to the width of the grown Chilli plant, if you want to breed them in the domestic garden or on the balcony.

Chilli growing is not just done for the fruits!

The appearance of a chilli plant is very imposing and pretty. The bright berries are a characteristic of their beauty. Many species develop beautiful flowers, which are often bluish or purple. For this reason, the chilies are also often regarded as ornamental and room plants. In many apartments and houses, you can find the decorative chilies.

What’s the wild conclusion?

The wildest chilies can be called the Chiltepin, and it is the most original of all chilli species. However, in our Pepperworld Hot Shop we have some more. Some of these varieties are considered extremely rare, such as the Chiltepin Sonora Brown. In the cultivation of these highly sensitive chilies, however, some factors have to be considered. Originally, the fiery Chilies originate from warm and dry fields with warm climate. Therefore the climatic conditions from the countries of origin have to be reproduced, as well as possible. This means, for example, that the plants, due to frost, are not placed outside too early and also that they cannot stay there in late autumn. You also need to think about the considerable size of the chilies, if you want to cultivate these plants in the garden or on the own balcony. The fruits of the chilies are rather hot than they are mild. Exceptions however, as always, confirm the rule! For many people, the bright berries are not the only reason for the breeding of chilies; their stunning beauty ensures that they are often found as an ornamental plant in homes.
