Sweet Pepper plants - everything you need to know!

See the following article for many interesting facts about the sweet pepper. What’s the plants habitus and why is its fruit so popular? These and other questions are answered in detail.

What does the plant look like?

The full-grown paprika reaches a height of about one meter. Some varieties of this mild Capsicum annuum are also up to one and a half feet tall. The fact that this greenhouse does not rise so high makes it good again with its broad growth. The bushy habit provides for a very lush inflorescence, which of course also has a very productive harvest result. The leaves of these plants are egg-shaped, or oval. However, the foliage, with a size of 30x 15 centimeters, is quite large. In the flowering phase, the pepper plants produce beautiful, bright flowers.

But why is the sweet pepper so popular?

Of course, that can be primarily attributed to their unique taste. This feeling of biting into a fresh, crunchy paprika is almost indescribable. This suggests another benefit, namely that the peppers can also be consumed raw. Of course, that's not all, and the versatility with which the fruit can be used in the kitchen convinces every connoisseur immediately! Not only are there countless recipes that contain peppers, but also many cooking methods that can be used to prepare them. A classic is for example the stuffed pepper. Of course you can also cook the peppers on the grill, they really taste great. In ground form, the pod has long been used as a spice; the kitchen is hardly imaginable without the powder. Furthermore, the sweet peppers are very healthy, the red fruits, especially, contain a lot of vitamin C. In addition to red, the pods are also of other colors, such as green and yellow. These colors make the vegetables very popular with children. Peppers are also an important supplier of minerals, such as magnesium, potassium or phosphorus, and as a plus, a sweet pepper contains very little calories. This is of course another reason for the extraordinary popularity of this vegetable. The best evidence of the popularity of peppers is, without question, their high distribution. Meanwhile, the fruits are no longer eaten only in their area of origin, Central and South America, but worldwide. The reasons why this is so, we have listed again clearly for you:

  • The fruits of the sweet pepper plants taste fresh.
  • Peppers are very crisp.
  • The peppers can also be eaten raw.
  • There can be included in a very diverse range of recipes.
  • Peppers can be prepared with very different cooking methods.
  • Paprika spice has long been an integrated part of the kitchen.
  • Peppers contain vitamins.
  • Peppers are a supplier of minerals.
  • A pepper contains few calories.
  • The bright colors of the fruits are also interesting for children.

What must be considered when growing the sweet peppers?

With your own pepper plants you have to pay a lot of attention, for example the location of the plant is very important. Among other things, the plant should be protected from wind at the same time, its locations needs allow much light and heat. However, the place where the plant stands should, ideally, not be exposed to permanent solar radiation. A "half-sunny" space is enough for a successful cultivation of the pepper plant. This can be the balcony, the terrace or the outdoor garden. Of course, pepper plants are also suitable for breeding in a greenhouse. Since it is quite often an occurrence, for this plant, due to the weight of the fruit, for it to start leaning towards the ground, you must protect it with planting rods. This way, you protect your pepper not only from itself, but also from external influences, such as the wind, for example. Bamboo rods are the best support, they are long and stable. Always make sure that the bottom of your pepper plant receives enough nutrients, as this plant is one that strongly dries the soil of its minerals. In addition, individual plants need enough space to develop their full splendor. In order for the later harvest to be as productive as possible, you should trim the plant as needed by cutting it back, so the plant receives significantly more air and light. The technical terms for this work step are "prune" or “thin out”. Although the plants must of course be sufficiently watered, under no circumstances may any dammed-up water occur at the root. Even so-called pests, such as snails can be a problem. So what you should pay attention to while growing paprika, we have summarized again for you:

  • The plant must be in a sheltered location.
  • The location should be "half-sunny".
  • The plant should be fixed with bamboo planting rods.
  • The soil must be nutrient-rich in any case, as the pepper is a “greedy eater”.
  • The plant needs sufficient space.
  • The plant must be cut back as needed to allow more light to enter.
  • The peppers must be well watered, but dammed-up water should be avoided.
  • Pepper plants can be prone to snails.

What else is interesting?

We have previously indicated that peppers are vegetables, but that's only half the story. When it comes to the peppers as food, the term vegetable is correct, as the pepper comes from a one-year-old plant. Botanically, however, the peppers can also be counted as fruit, as the fruit is formed from a flower.  Sweet peppers are, technically speaking, annual plants, but they can also be made to survive over winter. If you want to happily have your pepper plant again next year, you just have to put it inside in good time. But first, you should thin them out, as previously described.

What is the conclusion?

The pepper plant can reach up to one and a half meters in size, not particularly large. What it lacks in altitude, however, is made up for it with its bushy habit. The yield of these plants is therefore not inconsiderable. The fruit is now very popular all over the world. This is of course due to their taste, their versatility and their valuable ingredients. However, you have to pay attention to a few things when growing peppers, so that you can grow your own peppers for several years in a row. You can grow your peppers not only in the greenhouse, but also in the flower pot, on the balcony or on the terrace.
