Hot Sauce – the spicy teaser with tradition!
The first hot sauce was made over 140 years ago in the USA. At that time, the McIlhenny family came up with the idea to grind the Chilli peppers growing on their property, mix them with salt and store them in wooden barrels. After several years of storage, the paste was then mixed with vinegar and the extremely hot sauce was finished. When the American Civil War came to an end in 1965, there were many people who had made their own hot sauces. That's why the McIlhenny family patented their recipe. The sauce got the name "Tabasco® Brand Pepper Sauce" and today it stands in every supermarket shelf all around the world.
The name "Hot Sauce" has now established itself in many countries, as is the case with many anglicisms. ("Hot" has a double meaning and means not only "hot", but also "spicy"). In Spanish-speaking countries the hot sauce is called "Salsa Picante" which means exactly that - namely "hot sauce”. The name has also established in our home region as “hot sauce”. However, there is also the term "Chilli sauce", which however - in fact - refers to a different kind of sauce. Find out more here.
Of course there are many differences among the millions of hot sauces. Some producers want to make the flavor of a certain ingredient or chili special, others just want to make an extremely hot sauce, which burns away your whole mouth. These extremely hot sauces are a real adrenaline rush for many chiliheads! Some people jump with a parachute from the plane and others look for their own personal kick while eating hot sauces. There are, of course, competitions in which the most resilient pepperhead is chosen, and every year there is the Fiery Foods Show in Albuquerque, THE fair for all chiliheads that takes place. There, chiliheads from all over the world introduce their own hot sauces, exchange their experiences and live together their passion for chilies. Among the chiliheads there are some rock stars, who wanted to create their own hot sauce. An example of a Rock star chilihead would be Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, guitarist of Guns'n'Roses.
