Originally, '6-4' was released at the end of the 1950s; the development of this NuMex variant dates back to the 1940s. The long green New Mexican Chillies are practically staple foods in the US Southwest, eaten stuffed or as chopped vegetables with almost every meal, and '6-4' is one of the most popular varieties for this. The typical aroma develops during roasting, but over the past decades it had somehow become weaker, and many consumers complained about it. So Dr Paul Bosland and his colleagues at the Chile Pepper Institute at New Mexico State University went back to the roots: in 2002, '6-4' was taken from the state archives and stored in liquid nitrogen for 40 years. Through selection, the best plants were then chosen and propagated further - the strong original aroma was back, and along the way more robust, higher-yielding plants with uniform height and fruit size.
The next step was to plant large areas for seed production, and by January 2009 there will finally be enough seed available for New Mexico's chili farmers to grow the highly anticipated Heritage New Mexico 6-4. And we are happy to be able to offer this seed novelty in our shop at the same time!
The slightly hot chilies (1000-1500 SHU) are about 15 to 20 cm long, flattened up to 5 cm wide, the wall thickness is about 3.8 mm on average. In 75 days green fruits, in approx. 90 days red ripened.
