VIRGIN OLIVE OIL - THE MAIN INGREDIENT OF MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE!
Virgin olive oil is an important part of the Mediterranean cuisine. There are countless recipes that would only taste half as delicious without olive oil. The following article will tell you what they are and how to use virgin olive oil correctly in the kitchen. In Pepperworld you will not only find olive oils from different countries, but also very delicious compositions with other flavours - for example chili.
What is the meaning of "virgin"?
The word "virgin" literally means "natural" or "unchanged". And this already provides the whole explanation of what virgin olive oils are. These oils are produced under the most gentle conditions possible, by a mechanical process. The oil is pressed out by means of a mechanical oil mill. Since this process does not generate high temperatures, it is also called "cold pressing".
Refining of the oil, i.e. the process by which certain ingredients are removed with the help of heat, is generally not used for virgin olive oils. By this careful procedure the native olive oil keeps the typical taste of the respective variety. The colour of the oil is also an important indication of whether it is virgin olive oil or not. Color and taste of the olive oil are thus important quality characteristics. In order for the olive oil to bear the designation virgin, it must meet these requirements.
When you buy one of our virgin olive oils, you get a pure natural product. The fact that the manufacturers of the oils completely avoid the use of flavour enhancers during production should not go unmentioned at this point.
Our virgin olive oil comes from these countries:
The noble olive oils from Pepperworld come from the Mediterranean. For example, you will find very tasty oils from Spain and Italy in our shop. Our Italian oils, for example, come from Calabria, the region of the country that resembles the tip of a boot. The Spanish olive oils in our assortment come for example from Majorcan olives. Both regions are, due to the climatic conditions, very suitable for cultivating olive trees.
We carry very tasty extra virgin olive oils in the Pepperworld!
In our shop you will find a good selection of high quality virgin olive oils. Among them is an absolute highlight, the Spanish organic olive oil from Azada. The olives of this oil not only meet the requirements for an extra virgin oil, but are cultivated according to organic standards. They are harvested by hand by Spanish farmers before being pressed in Azada's own oil mill.
The Azada brand produces some high quality olive oils. However, the fabulous organic olive oil always serves as the basis. In order to produce other oils, this oil is flavoured with other ingredients already during the milling process. This results in wonderful compositions, such as garlic olive oil or chilli olive oil with a light smoky note.
Speaking of chillies, if you are looking for a fiery olive oil, we highly recommend our "Olio Habanero". This oil is produced exclusively for our shop. For the delicious chili oil we use a fine Calabrian olive oil, which is spiced up with the fire of Habaneros. This olive oil literally warms from the inside, on our scale of heat level the Olio Habanero reaches a 7th place.
Another speciality is certainly the premium olive oil from Prep. This oil convinces by its appealing, golden green colour and a characteristic taste. The full-bodied oil is obtained by cold pressing, which retains all the important ingredients.
Also very tasty is the aromatic olive oil "Marinada" from the manufacturer WürzWerk. The extra virgin olive oil is refined with the aromas of fresh basil and parmesan.
The flavoured olive oil "Genovese" also comes from the house of WürzWerk. This blend also consists of extra virgin olive oil, basil and Parmesan.
Really delicious is also the olive oil with lemon, of the already mentioned producer Azada. The freshness of the lemon goes perfectly with the taste of the organic olives. This tasty oil is perfect for fish and seafood, for example. However, the possible uses are much more varied. You should try the olive oil with the citrus flavour in quark dishes or in pastries - in our opinion a heavenly taste.
This is how you use virgin olive oil properly:
Since our oils come from the Mediterranean, they are firmly anchored in the local food culture. The olive oils from Pepperworld are therefore ideal for preparing Mediterranean dishes.
However, it is important when dealing with virgin, i.e. cold-pressed, olive oil that the oils should not be heated above 180° Celsius. This is due to important ingredients which, although they are beneficial to health in cold oil, produce toxic compounds when heated. In addition, virgin olive oil begins to smoke earlier than refined edible oils. The so-called smoke point is therefore lower. This creates other toxic substances, which are even suspected of increasing the risk of cancer.
Many dishes are unthinkable without virgin olive oil:
As already mentioned, virgin olive oil is indispensable in the Mediterranean cuisine. In this context, we immediately think of a real classic, the pizza. Our native olive oils provide in each pizza dough for an authentic taste. However, the variety of recipes with olive oil is far greater, a quick look on the Internet is enough. Among the simple recipes with olive oil, which always go down well, is of course the Mediterranean vinaigrette. Another example of the use of virgin olive oil in Mediterranean cuisine is bruschetta, which is toasted white bread with olive oil and spices. We have summarized the three classics of Mediterranean cuisine for you in the following list:
- Pizza
- Mediterranean vinaigrette
- Bruschetta
The Pepperworld conclusion is:
The term "virgin" literally means "natural." A virgin olive oil is therefore purely natural and not treated. The criteria for this quality level are, for example, the production process and the quality of the fruit. The olives for the Pepperworld extra virgin olive oils all come from the Mediterranean, more precisely from Italy and Spain. In these regions the use of virgin olive oil in cooking is widespread. We cannot imagine how pizza, bruschetta and co. taste without olive oil.
When using the extra virgin olive oil you should be careful that the oil does not heat up over 180° Celsius. Otherwise toxic compounds are formed from the ingredients of the olives. At this temperature is also the smoke point of virgin olive oil. The smoke produces other harmful substances that are suspected to cause cancer.
