Thai basil, even sweet basil, is the delicious, Asian variety!
The Thai basil comes originally - as the name implies - from Thailand. There it is used for seasoning soups, sauces and curries. The basil leaves are sprinkled raw over the dishes, or cooked very briefly. The taste of basil, which is reminiscent of anise and liquorice, is also called sweet basil.
