Buy the Carolina Reaper – the hottest Chilli in the world
Watch out – not for the faint hearted! This Chilli has the name of the reaper for a reason (“Reaper” is derived from the “Grim Reaper”) That the Carolina Reaper the hottest Chili in the world is was not only stated by its creator – Ed Currie – but was also confirmed by the Guinness book of world records with a measure of 1.569.300 Scoville units. This is what makes this Chilli the hottest Chilli in the world. In order to have a perspective: The Carolina Reaper is approximately 460 up to 1000 times hotter than a Jalapeno. The taste is often described as fruity sweet with a hint of cinnamon and chocolate.
Characteristics of the Carolina Reaper plant
The Carolina Reaper is due to its long ripening period a late bloomer. Only the germination of the seeds needs up to 4 weeks. As soon as the plant is big enough, in order to carry fruit, the ripening period of the fruit can take approximately 100 days, which delays the harvest to the late autumn. In the ripening process the fruit is first green, gets colored red and then at the end is fiery red. Another characteristic of the Carolina Reaper is besides its color the shape. On the lower side it has a “sting” which resembles a lot that of a Scorpion and the surface is rough and wrinkled. The plant can grow up to a height of 150 cm and 120 cm wide. The fruit has an average length between 2.2 and 8 cm including the thorn and a width of 2.5 up to 8 cm as well.
The origins of the Carolina Reaper and its heat
Like the name already lets us know, the Carolina Reaper was bread in South Carolina, so in the south of the USA and has been made to a new variety. The cultivator, Ed Currie has developed this new Chilli variety while in the search for a cure against cancer and heart failure. As he found out that worldwide indigenous people develop these illnesses only very rarely and that these people often eat hot Chillis at different meals, he has started to experiment around with different Chillis. One day, for the experiment “HP22B” he interbreed a Pakistan “Naga” with a sweet red Habanero. As Currie tried out this new Chilli he knew that he must do everything that is in his power in order to stabilize this new Chilli type. This is though a lengthy process. In order to stabilize a new plant 8 to 10 generations must be cultivated and the seeds must be used for the next generations. During this process the plant has deviations and stability issues in building the fruit until all these factors are stabilized. After 10 years, in the year 2010 Currie has tested for the first time this new Chilli in a laboratory. He did not expect the result. The first test has concluded that his Chilli 1.474.000 Scoville units measures. Scoville is the unit with which the heat of a Chilli is measured. As a comparison, a Jalapeno has between 2.500 and 8.000 Scoville units. Since then, this Chilli variety has become even hotter and measures in the most cases over 2.200.000 Scoville units. The Carolina Reaper is so hot that you have to handle it only with gloves and when processing the Chilli you have to wear protective glasses in order to avoid burning and irritations of the skin.
Did you know?
The initial name HP22B is not a real name, but is the marking of the exact place that the plant had when it was bread during the experiment. HP22B stands for the following: HP=High Power, 22= number of the pot, B= plant B. This is a simple register when planting on scale. It was by accident the pot HP22B, which has brought to light the hottest Chilli in the world.
Carolina Reaper in the food – nutritional information and further benefits
The Carolina Reaper Chilli is – like a lot of other varieties – rich in vitamin C. Furthermore it contains Beta-Carotene and antioxidants in form of Bioflavonoid. Cultivation in mini greenhouse and minimal temperature
Because the Carolina Reaper is a newer variety we do not know a lot with certainty, what concerns the cultivation at home. A lot of experiences have brought up some points which enable also the growing of the Carolina Reaper at home. What most don’t know is that the seeds of the Carolina Reaper cannot be plated immediately in the open. The germination of the seeds needs a moist (not soggy) earth, a lot of light and high temperatures. These conditions cannot be met under the clear sky in Germany. Because it can take some months until the plant can carry fruit, and the ripening of the fruit occurs only in the autumn, it is at the point of the germination of the seeds way to cold outside. Who wants to enjoy the Carolina Reaper in the autumn should start and plant the seeds in January or February. This is why a mini greenhouse is recommended. A small incubator for plants which is best kept inside the house on the edge of a window in order to profit as much as possible from the sunrays is recommended. As a soil it is best if you use peat pallets in which the seeds are planted. After the plant has grown to a decent strength for transplanting it ca be moved to a bigger pot. In order to bring a plant to the stage where you can transplant it you must assure that the temperature during the day does not go below 25ºC and the temperature during the nighttime does not fall below 15ºC.
Plantation in the open
The plantation I the open can occur as soon as the plant has reached a height of 15 cm and when there is no more risk of frost. The optimal time for replanting is when the outside temperature during the day is at least 25ºC and during the night the temperature does not drop below 5ºC. A greenhouse can be of help here. Carolina Reaper grows best in a well fertilized soil and a downfall of 5cm water per week. If the plant is watered less during the period in which the fruits grow will increase de Capsaicin amount in the fruit but in the same time diminishes the dimension of the fruit and a lower fruit production overall. The flowering phase begins once the temperature during the night are between 18 and 25ºC. If the temperatures during the night are over 29ºC, the flowering phase does not begin.
Soil and fertilization
The Carolina Reaper plant grows best in a mix of earth and natural compost, as well as other natural materials that can retain the water. Our Garden Boost Chilli fertilizer delivers your Carolina Reaper plant as well the perfect mix of all the nutrients that it needs. The earth should never be completely wet, but should be kept moist. When planting into a pot one must look that this is big enough so that the rots ae enough space to grow because these can become quite big. Best use a pot that has a volume of at least 10 liter. A lot of people have reported that the taste of the Carolina Reaper is a lot better when the plant is planted in a natural environment.
The Carolina Reaper Chilli can be harvested and eaten even when it is still green. Who waits until the fruit is fully ripe can taste the full flavor and feel the whole heat of this Chilli.
Carolina Reaper Chilli in the kitchen – possible uses
Due to its high heat, the Carolina Reaper should be never eaten directly. It is recommended that you use this Chilli in order to produce very hot Chilli Sauces or Salsas. Because of the heat it is not recommended that you add it directly to the food. Often the Carolina Reaper is dried completely and then ground to a powder, which can be then used as a spice (in very small quantities).
Last warning – Please take into consideration!
Not just the direct consumption can turn into a painful experience, but also the processing of these Chilli pods is tough. The skin and especially the mucous membranes are very sensitive when it comes to the extract of the Carolina Reaper pods. When processing (washing, cutting, preparing) it is absolutely necessary to wear rubber gloves and eye glasses. If you want to make Carolina Reaper Chilli powder a protection of the airways with the help of an air mask is recommended. This Chilli can be especially dangerous for children and baby’s because these cannot tolerate the powerful effects of the Carolina Reaper like grownups. This is why you need to store tit away from children’s reach.
