BBQ Rub - dry marinade for grilling!

The following article deals with the so-called Rubs. What exactly is it and why are they important for steaks or barbecues? These and other questions will be answered in detail in the next paragraphs.

What is a rub?

The Rubs are, basically, nothing more than spice blends. Depending on what taste you want your dry marinade to leave on the meat, of course, different spices are used. For example, a rub may be spicy if it has hot chilli in it. A good example of this variety is a Habanero Rub. Some rubs are refined with a wonderful smoke flavor, others taste like Indian curry. Thus, there really is something for every taste.

How are the rubs used?

In order to achieve a great result, the spice mixture is massaged in advance in the food that will be grilled. However, not too much pressure should be exercised. First, the rub is sprinkled over the food, then rubbed by hand, evenly. If there is an excess of spices, you can easily tap it off. Under no circumstances, however, should you continue to use the excess spices, as there is a high risk that they may be contaminated with germs. If the grilled food is massaged with the dry marinade, the flavors still have to be absorbed by the grilled food, which takes time in the first place. So that the taste can move in optimally, the food should be well-packed and be placed for several hours in the refrigerator, so that the taste can pull through. If the packaging is vacuumed, the result becomes even more intense as the rub is immediately absorbed by the food. If the grilled food does not take time to absorb the rub, the spices would burn instantly by the heat of the grill. The simple steps on how to treat your food with the rubs, we have summarized again in the following listing for you:

  • Add the Rub on the food that is to be grilled
  • Massage the spice mixture (not exert too much pressure)
  • Excess spice can be simply knocked off
  • The excess under no circumstances should it be used again for hygienic reasons.
  • Pack the food well.
  • Put the rubbed food in the refrigerator for several hours.

What results do the rubs achieve?

Of course, with a marinade the result is first and foremost the flavoring. Of course, this also applies to a dry marinade with a rub. But there is another, great effect. The spices create a wonderful, crunchy crust on the grilled food, so that every bite becomes a real treat. You can use the rubs not only for the food itself, but also in the kitchen like any other spice mixture. This means you can basically spice up just about anything with the rubs, creating a very individual taste. How about, for example, a great sauce, which is later served to the meal, which is cooked with the help of a rub? The desired results, which are to be achieved by the Rubs, are thus:

  • Formation of taste
  • Emergence of a crust
  • Spice many other dishes (for example, sauces)

A set covers many tastes!

Rubs are, as already mentioned, in different flavors. If you organize a barbecue more often and also grill different foods, a composition of different rubs may be the right choice. In one set there are spice blends for many different foods, from meat to fish there is the right rub for every barbecue. Of course, the range of services is very broad. In addition to the rubs, the sets often contain other grill ingredients, such as sauces. And also, practical refill packages are of course available.

Are there any special rubs?

Yes, they exist. If you really like it very much, try the Bhut Jolokia Rub. This spice mixture reaches the highest value on our heat scale, namely 10. The Sriracha Rub is also quite delicious. With this dry marinade you can produce, without much effort, a very authentic Thai tasting dish. There are Rubs in so many, regional flavors. A Mediterranean rub, for example, in the translation means "flavors to roast" and this name is indeed very accurate. It consists of fine herbs from the Mediterranean and Italian chilli peppercorn. The Jamaican Rub ensures a pure Caribbean taste, which not only fits very well with meat, but also to poultry and fish. Furthermore, there are still Rubs whose blend harmonizes particularly well with certain foods, such as the Rubs for Ribs for example. Unfortunately, the rub is not enough for the typical shine of the ribs. To achieve this, you must brush the ribs with a glace several times during grilling, from all sides. The most important specialties under the rubs we have put together again:

  • Bhut Jolokia Rub
  • Sriracha Rub
  • Mediterranean Rub
  • Jamaican Rub
  • Rub for ribs

Not only suitable for classic barbecues:

The food that has been treated with the rubs, can be cooked not only on a conventional Charcoal grill, but also on all other barbecues. Especially in a smoker, thanks to the rubs, a particularly soft result is achieved. The food, for example, a roast, but can of course also be prepared in the oven.

What is the spicy conclusion?

Rub is the name of the program! These are spice mixtures with which the food is rubbed in before grilling. Depending on the taste and the food that is to be treated in advance for the barbecue, there are different spice blends. The Rubs are not only available individually but also as a set to prepare all sorts of different foods on the grill. Of course, these spice blends are naturally responsible for the later taste. The good taste is not the only result that can be achieved with the rubs, the formation of a crust is also a wonderful effect. Of course, there are also countless creations, some of which are real specialties, such as the hot Bhut Jolokia Rub or the Sriracha Rub. Mainly the dry marinades are used before grilling, however, with the rubs you can also succeed with your roast in the oven.
