    Just as popular, but around 50 times hotter than the Jalapeno, we have the Habanero. The small Chilies look quite harmless, but they really have it in them! Habaneros' heat is around 250,000 to 300,000 Scoville units (SHUs) and some special breeders - for example, chocolate habaneros top around 400,000 Scoville units.     The name "Habanero" is translated from Spanish as "from Havana", however, the pretty, hot pods do not come from there at all. According to research, the Habanero comes from Mexico, more specifically from the Yucatan Peninsula, where the Habanero is still mainly cultivated today. Other Habanero cultivation areas are the Caribbean, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama and the USA. The Habanero was discovered in the early days and has been distributed by sailors around the world. For a time, it was also believed that the Habanero came from China, because of their genus that it belongs to, which is called Capsicum Chinese.

    In addition to the yellow and orange Habaneros from Yucatán, Mexico, there are also red Habaneros cultivated in the Caribbean. But that’s not all! There are also breeds and relatives of the tasty Habanero. The NuMex Suave, for example, is a breed from the Habanero, which shows very little heat (on the heat scale: 1-2). Although this variety has lost its heat, its Habanero taste has been preserved. So, if you want to cook a Habanero hot sauce, you can use the NuMex Suave to increase the Habanero flavor without the sauce becoming even hotter. Since 2003 one can buy seeds of these delicious, mild Habanero. In addition, they are also available in different colors! Besides Habanero breeds, there are also other allied species, such as the Scotch Bonnet, which is widespread particularly in the Caribbean.

    Options for processing Habanero pods?

    Habaneros are mainly used for the production of fruity hot sauces. The Habanero has a very special tropical-fruity flavor, therefore, besides its extreme heat, it gives hot sauces not only enough heat, but also a very delicious flavor.

    Of course, you can also cook at home a large variety of delicious sauces with the wonderful Habanero. However, make sure that gloves are worn while handling Habaneros, and carefully avoid any contact of the Habaneros or their juices with your skin, as it can burn like hell!

    If you want to prepare a hot salad, a hot soup or a fiery Salsa, then Habaneros are your perfect choice. Additional to the fresh Habaneros, you can also buy them dried. These can be grinded, for example in a Coffee Grinder that is no longer used. The powder can be added to a variety of dishes, to make them nicely and hot. When grinding, however, be careful, for the dust of the Habaneros should not be inhaled. Another way to process dried Habaneros is to soak them overnight in water. Then they become soft and can be easily crushed.

    Growing and Harvesting Habanero

    The best way would be to sow your Habanero seeds 8 weeks before the last frost. It is best to use a mini-greenhouse, as this will allow you to simulate the perfect climate for your Habanero seeds to feel like in Mexico. The ideal temperature for the seeds to germinate is of 21°C. The first seedlings will be visible after 12-21 days. It will take another 100 days until the first Habaneros are ripe. However, it should be noted, that the Chilli plants thrive better in their mother land.

    In a colder country, as Germany, for example, you can expect a higher number of days till the fruit hits maturity.

    However, as long as the Habanero plants are placed in a sunny, warm place, the plants can develop well and you can expect to be able to harvest many Habaneros at the end of the season! Of course, the fruits will not be quite as big as they would be in Mexico, but also smaller pods have the same delicious taste and the same wonderful heat as the large Mexican Habaneros.
