Goji Plant: The Magic Weapon from Nature

This article introduces you to the Chinese Goji plant in more detail. Learn all about the beautiful shrub with healing properties. The many positive qualities of the plant clearly speak for themselves. You too will become a fan of the goji plant!

What is the correct botanical name of the goji plant?

The Latin name of this shrub is "Lycium Barbarum". In English, the plant is also known under other names, such as buckthorn, common wolfberry, wolfberry, witch's twine and devil's twine. The goji plant is nowadays available in different breeds, with their own names. Some of these names are even protected by trademark law. The goji plant is, like the tomato, for example, a so-called nightshade plant.

Where did the shrub originally come from?

The natural occurrence of the goji plant is limited to China, more specifically to an area near the Himalayas. There the fruits of the goji plant, the so-called goji berries, have been used for more than 6000 years, among others by monks, in traditional medicine.

Meanwhile, the Goji plant grows almost everywhere in the world!

Due to its beauty and healing properties, the goji plant is now cultivated all over the world. You can even grow them in your own garden if you want. To grow the plant requires only a sunny, warm place. The shrub grows in almost all soils. There are only two exceptions, extremely saline soils or the ones contaminated with heavy metals. As the trend around the goji plant in Europe holds true, Goji plants are cultivated in Spain and other southern European countries as well.

Which plant parts of the goji plant can you use?

The fruits of the bush, the goji berries, are specially interesting. These are sold in different versions, for example dried, as juice or in powder form. Since the plant is cultivated in Europe, nowadays you can buy berries fresh more often.

    These varieties are very popular:

Among the most popular crosses is the "Big Lifeberry". You can take this name literally, as this shrub offers you a rich harvest of large goji berries. The Sweet Lifeberry berry is similar in size but much sweeter than the other Goji berry. Also, the variety "Turgidus", that is popular with many people and incidentally also available in our shop. All these breeds are crosses of the already mentioned Chinese original form of the plant (Lycium Barbarum). However, there are some other related species, for example, the so-called "Lycium Chinese". The berries of this shrub are traditionally not used for consumption nor as traditional medicine. Other relatives of this plant species are Lycium Ruthenicum, Lycium Turcomanicum, Lycium Palladium and Lycium Europaeum. The different varieties of the goji plant are listed in the following list:

    • Lycium Barbarum
    • Lycium Chinese
    • Lycium Ruthenicum
    • Lycium Turcomanicum
    • Lycium Palladium
    • Lycium Europaeum

The beautiful shrub is also considered an ornamental plant!

The arrangement of the individual leaves and the wonderful, purple-colored flowers ensure that the goji plant is often planted not only as a medicinal but also as an ornamental plant. The flowering phase of the goji plant, depending on the variety, lasts from June to September. During this time, you can enjoy the colorful flowers of the shrub every day.

    What else is important?

The shoots of the goji plant are very long, so you have to prune them about twice a year. Once the plant is cropped, it will form new shoots, which will give you a new full shrub. Otherwise, if the shoots are too long, the plant automatically will also have less flowers and berries. This is logical, as the plant would need more energy to provide the more distant flowers with nutrients. When pruning the goji plant, however, you should beware of its thorns. But there is more that you need to know about the buckthorn - for example, that it needs a lot of space. This is related to the special nature of the roots. The goji plant has so-called rhizomes. These so-called "ground sprouts" serve the plant for propagation. The disadvantage is that the roots cannot be contained by cutting off but continue to grow like the upper shoots. To prevent spreading throughout the garden, you can also plant the goji plant with subterranean boundaries or in a large bucket. The wolfberry is a perennial plant that flowers only in the second or third year. However, some breeds are already blooming in the first year. The bush survives the winter without problems, temperatures of up to -25 ° Celsius do not bother him.

The goji plant is a true survivor!

Not only the high resistance to the cold is a tactic of the plant. The buckthorn is a so-called "self-fertilizer", that is, the flower can pollinate itself. This is practically natural, because no other plant and no transmission path is needed. The Goji plant has another strategy to survive, or to spread. A shoot literally hangs through the flower and touches the ground with the flowers. That's enough, so that the goji plant can form new offshoots. The already mentioned roots are also a useful property for survival. All these skills make the Goji plant a true survivor.

The conclusion about the Goji plant is:

The Goji plant is more commonly known under the name of common wolfberry, wolfberry or witch's thread. Originally, this genus comes from China. In traditional Chinese medicine, the fruits of the bush, the Goji berries, have been used there for about 6000 years. The shrub itself is also very decorative and is therefore also planted as an ornamental plant. The goji plant is available in different varieties. If you want to grow Goji yourself, you need to know some important basics. For example, the fact that the plant needs to be pruned at regular intervals to maximize the yield of berries is important. This wonder weapon from nature is a true survivor. The rhizomes (roots) and the property of self-pollination are just two of the many tactics of this strong plant.
