Sweet mustard - not only popular in Bavaria!

The following article describes the ingredient "sweet mustard" in more detail. What is it sweetened with and who invented it. These are just two of the questions that will be answered in detail in the next few paragraphs.

Since when is the sweet mustard available?

The sweet mustard is an original German invention. The merchant Johann Conrad Develey invented this variant in 1854 in Bavaria. Originally, the spicy dip of French Dijon mustard, spirit vinegar, caramelized sugar and, to this day, unknown spice mixture. The new mustard is quickly becoming very popular, even at the Bavarian royal court, it is eaten, even at this time. The inventor of the sweet mustard died in 1886 in the Bavarian capital Munich.

    Which ingredients sweeten the mustard?

As mentioned earlier, the original recipe includes caramelized sugar to achieve the desired sweetness. Meanwhile, there are countless modifications. In particularly noble variants, the sugar portion is replaced for example by the addition of honey, in less noble variants by sweetener. In addition, extra mustard seeds are sometimes added to the mixture which will also provide a sweeter taste of the finished spice.

    What's the sweet mustard for?

Sweet mustard is traditionally part of a Bavarian breakfast, to which a hearty white sausage is known to be served. This is also the reason why sweet mustard is often referred to as "Bavarian mustard" or "Weißwurst mustard". Another, Bavarian meat product is Leberkäse, also called "Leberkas" by the locals, and it also tastes delicious with a sweet mustard. Of course, the condiment can also be used wherever conventional mustard would otherwise be used. This specialty is particularly well suited as a crust on a roast, as with the sugar caramelized by the heat, will develop the sweet mustard aroma - a very distinctive taste. The roast itself can then be eaten again together with the sweet mustard. But also, for fish, especially for salmon, sweet mustard is really great. With this ingredient, the honey-mustard-dill sauce for your fish dish, will, with absolute certainty, be the blast! Although we cannot imagine that there are many people who do not like to eat hot, sweet mustard is a real alternative for them as a sauce for the sausage or the freshly grilled meat. This mustard is also excellent as a garnish, for example on boiled eggs. Furthermore, your next salad dressing will be an absolute must when using this mustard with its authentic taste. To which food the sweet mustard can be served, we have summarized again in the following list:

    • Weißwurst
    • Leberkäse
    • Roast
    • Bratwurst
    • Meat (grilled)
    • Fish (especially salmon)
    • In the dressing to salad
    • Boiled eggs

Sweet mustard is not only excellent as an addition to meat or as an ingredient in sauces and dressings. This specialty also tastes wonderful as a spread, for example on a freshly toasted slice of bread.

Which derivatives are available in the market?

The offer of sweet mustard is really extremely large, for example, there are fruity figs and spicy compositions with wild garlic and other wild herbs. A slightly refreshing variant is the mustard with lime, which, moreover, harmonizes very well with fish. The same goes for the delicious Riesling mustard. Another popular derivation is the wonderful, summer tomato mustard. There are really countless varieties, we can especially recommend the Chilli mustard, the horseradish one, and the variety with green pepper. All creations are finely tuned - they are true delicacies. We have summarized some of the delicious varieties again:

    • Fig mustard
    • Wild garlic mustard
    • Lime mustard
    • Chilli pepper
    • Tomato mustard
    • Riesling mustard
    • Lemon mustard
    • Sweet mustard with green pepper

Sweet mustard is also popular beyond the Weiswurst equator!

All varieties are equally popular and that meanwhile even far beyond the borders of Bavaria. The convincing mixture of sweetness and the distinctive mustard flavor convinces even the Nordic populations in the highest degree. However, the mustard is also very popular internationally. Due to the ingredients of the sweet mustard is also suitable for a vegan diet. In addition, the mustard is gluten-free, which of course is important if you are allergic to the sticky protein. This fact, along with the unique tastes of these mustards, is certainly a reason why Bavarian mustard is now well known and loved far beyond the borders of the southern federal state.

    Where to buy sweet mustard?

Unfortunately, such a specialty, like the sweet mustard, is not widely available. Most conventional supermarkets and discounters do not carry this delicacy in their assortment. Exceptions of course confirm the rule, occasionally these stores include such products in their offer. Mostly these actions are limited in time. If you want to buy sweet mustard permanently in the shop, then you will find the specialty most likely in a so-called delicacy shop. Unfortunately, these stores are not located in all cities. In our technological world, however, there is a way in which the special foods are permanently available. This of course means the World Wide Web. Of course, we at Pepperworld do not want to deprive you of the sweet mustard and other delicacies, so we also offer a selection of special delicacies in our Pepperworld Hot Shop.

What is the sweet and hot conclusion?

Originally the sweet mustard comes from Bavaria and is eaten with white sausage and Leberkäse. The original recipe from 1854 contains caramelized sugar. Nowadays, there are many variations, for example with honey or sweetener. In terms of taste, it is suitable for many dishes, depending on the type of mustard. Meanwhile, the Bavarian specialty is known far beyond the borders of Bavaria and is also very popular, which is, of course due to the taste, but the fact that the mustard is vegan and gluten free, also contributes to the success. Unfortunately, the mustard is not offered in every supermarket. But if you want to buy such a specialty in the store, so-called delicacy is your one stop shop. However, these stores are not available in every city. Of course, in our modern age, there is another way to buy food, namely the Internet.
